Literary achievements:

Books published


Author of more than 125 books including novels, short stories, plays, travelogues, anthologies and also books on adult education, workers’ education, environmental education and population education in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi.

Translation of short stories and novels:

Short-stories and novels targeting the current social and national problems and issues (Literacy, dowry, bonded and child labour, status of women, national integration, etc.) have been translated into various regional languages and foreign languages.


Adaptation of novel ‘Karmanwali’ as a play


The National School of Drama, New Delhi adapted my novel ‘Karmanwali’ into a full length play and staged it in Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi in June 1990.  The theme of the play is amity, brotherhood and national and emotional integration.  The National School of Drama gave about hundred performances of the play in various cities of India in subsequent years.

            The Haryana Urdu Akademi organized a two-day Drama Festival from 28th to 29th March 2005 at Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh.  On the first day, my drama entitled ‘Ek Safar Dard Ka’, based on my novel Karmanwali was staged by Theatre Age.  It received tremendous applause from the audience.  A big coverage from the press and electronic media was given.

Serial in Punjabi titled “Mera Ranjha Mera jogi” based on my novel ‘Karmanwali’ has been very successfully telecast from Doordarshan, Srinagar and Jalandhar recently.  The viewers appreciated it tremendously.

8.         International/National Assignments/Awards/Honours

(i)                 UNESCO Assignments/Awards
a)         Visited various East African Countries, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand on        UNESCO Fellowship for studying the programme of Adult and Non-formal Education, specially the preparation of learning materials for adult learners and industrial workers.  Visited Pakistan three times on invitations from literary organizations on a good-will mission in 1988, 1989 and 1994.  Visited USA and Canada on a sponsored invitation and participate in a number of literary functions from September 1999 to January 2000.

b)         Was invited recently to participate in the 12th World Punjabi Conference organized at Lahore from 16-19 April 2005, in which about 200 delegates from various countries participating and presented their papers.  I too presented a paper entitled “Bonding for Peace through Literature” in the conference.                                       

                        Chaudhary Parveiz Ellahi, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Punjab (Pakistan) released a collection of my short stories entitled “Samundari Hawaon Ka Safar” on the occasion.  The book had been dedicated to Janab Chaudhary Parvez Ellahi Sahib.  It contains a novelette and stories for strengthening the friendly relationship between the two-neighouring countries.

(ii)               National Ghalib Award
The prestigious National Ghalib Award by the President of India in 1986, was conferred in recognition of my meritorious service rendered to the enrichment of Urdu fiction.

(iii)             Nuqoosh Award from Pakistan
In December 1990, Pakistan conferred a very prestigious Nuqoosh Award for my long and meritorious service to the enrichment of Urdu prose.

(iv)              Nehru National Literacy Award 1991

On 8th September 1991(International Literacy Day), the Vice-President of India conferred this award upon me for my outstanding contribution in the field of Literacy and for preparing literature for the promotion of National Literacy Mission.  I am the first recipient of this National Award in this part of the country.

(v)               Recipient of Hindi-Urdu Sahitya Committee Award for 1993.  His Excellency, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh conferred this award in a special function organized at Lucknow.

(vi)             Recipient of Life Time Achievement Award in 2005 conferred by International Punjabi Conference, Lahore(Pakistan)

(vii)           Recipient of Rama Krishna Jaidayal Harmony Award conferred by the organization of Understanding and Fraternity, New Delhi in 1998.

(viii)         Recipient of Padma Shri Award from the President of India for the year 2006 for meritorious service in the field of Literature and Education, on 29th March 2006.

(ix)             Recipient of Shiromani Urdu Sahityakar Award from Punjab Govt. on 1st November 2006.

(x)               Recipient of NLM – UNESCO Award conferred by Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development for the year 2007.  Her Excellency, Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, President of India conferred this prestigious award on 8th September 2007(the International Literacy Day) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

(xi)             Recipient of Sahir Ludhianvi Award conferred by Adeeb International(Regd.), Sahir Cultural Academy, Ludhiana on 1st December 2007 in recognition of my distinctively qualitative service and contribution to Urdu language & Literature and Promotion of Fraternal Bonds Human Dignity and Peace through my writings.

(xii)           Recipient of the title of Fakhar-E-Haryana Award conferred by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Haryana, Ch. Bhupinder Singh Hooda Sahib on 12th June 2009 along with a cash award of Rs.1,51,000/- , in recognition of my constant and persistent meritorious services to the promotion of Urdu Language.

(xiii)         In recognition of my meritorious service to the promotion of Urdu Language for the last seventy years, a Special Number on my life and achievements was brought on by the Editor, Aalmi Adab, New Delhi, Sh. Nand Kishore Vikram, which was presented to me in the form of Abhinandan Granth in a function on 12th June 2009, specially arranged by the Ghalib Institute, New Delhi to celebrate my 90th Birth Day.  This Abhinandan Granth was released by His Excellency, the then Governor of Haryana, Dr. A.R.Kidwai in the presence of a large number of Urdu writers, media persons, journalists and my admirers.

(xiv)         Recipient of Vayoshreshtha Samman, 2010 conferred by the Government of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.  Shri Mukul Wasnik, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India conferred this prestigious Samman on 1st October 2010 on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons.

10.       Ph.D.Thesis on my Literary Writings

Five Ph.D.degrees have been awarded in the Universities of Panjab, Osmania, Hyderabad and Kashmir to Research Scholars who did research work on my writings during the last few years.
11.       Contribution to the cause of Adult Education Movement:

(i)                 Have been closely associated with the Adult Education Movement in India for the last more than 40 years.
(ii)               Helped the States of Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh in the formulation and implementation of Adult and Non-formal Education programmes.
(iii)             Prepared special types of teaching-learning material for men and women in various languages like Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Dogri and Kashmiri.
(iv)             Have adopted one big slum area of Union Territory Chandigarh (Colony No.4) under the Total Literacy Campaign launched by the Union Territory, Chandigarh. I am a member of the Literacy Council of the Union Territory, Chandigarh.

12.       Theatre:

(i)                 From the very start, I have been actively engaged in the theatre activities and have been writing and staging plays on various burning social themes.
(ii)               “Theatre Age”, a Drama Troupe of experienced, theatre personalities staged my play ‘Bina Chhat Ke Ghar’, based on my novel of the same title on the theme of ‘Prohibition’ a number of times in Chandigarh and at various places in Haryana.  This play has been followed by other purposeful social plays for the people of Chandigarh and neighboring areas.

13.       Television and Radio

(i)                 I have been writing plays for the various stations of All India radio for the last more than half a century.

(ii)               I have been regularly writing plays for Doordarshan for the last more than ten years.

(iii)             My talks, stories, interviews and poetry are regularly broadcast from All India Radio and televised by Doordarshan Jalandhar and Delhi.

(iv)             I am participating in the Mushairas telecast by different TV Centres and various stations of the All India Radio.

14.       Films

(i)                 I am associated with films also and have scripted a few film scripts for the film industry. I was Hony. Literary Advisor of the film ‘Man Jeete Jag Jeet’ produced by the renowned Actor and Director Shri Sunil Dutt. This film was exempted from entertainment tax in Punjab and Chandigarh.
(ii)               The eminent actress – Smt.Rama Vij, a producer of well-known serials on Doordarshan, is producing a feature film highlighting the composite culture of Punjab in collaboration with me.

18.       Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Haryana)

In 2004 Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu(Haryana) has been established to undertake a number of programmes and projects for the promotion of Urdu Language and literature in Haryana.  I was unanimously elected President of this prestigious organization.

During the last about forty years I have been chairing some of the very prestigious national and international literary Seminars, Conferences, Meetings, Poetic Symposia, Discussion Groups, etc. and a number of such events in the fields of Literacy, Population Education and Preparation of Reading Materials for the neo-literates in various languages.

This book containing selected Ghazals and Nazams of Faiz Ahmed Faiz was   released in the last function of the Centenary Celebrations in India held on 11th March 2011, in the Multi Purpose Hall of the Haryana Raj Bhawan. His Excellency, Janab Jagannath Pahadia was the Chief Guest.  Begum Salima Hashmi, daughter of Late Faiz Ahmed Faiz, along with some eminent scholars and poets from various parts of Pakistan, had specially come from Pakistan to participate in the function.  Many important Urdu scholars from India also participated and spoke about Faiz and his writings.

         His Excellency, the Governor of Haryana,
         honoured Begum Salima Hashmi and the scholars
         from Pakistan and India.

         His Excellency released this book in the function
         and presented its copies to Begum Salima Hashmi,
         the Pakistani and Indian delegates, on this occasion.
